Cherry Blossom Fondant Cake for Jeremy's Birthday!

I gave my friend and her 3 kids a ride to the bus station today on base coz they are going to the Philippines for a vacation. She told me the eldest daughter cant believe I am already back and she wasn't informed so the mom asked why and her answer was "because she makes the yummiest chocolate cake ever". So i promised her when they get back from vacation I would have one ready waiting for her. I told them I made one for Jeremy's birthday but since its not chocolate at all, I didnt bother bringing some for them. Jeremy told me last year that he prefers the yellow cake so I made a mental note when I bought supplies.  I thought I would have the whole day to work on the cake but it turned out Jeremy wont be going to work at all, so I rushed making it and it wasnt such a surprise as I have planned.

I never really had any formal lessons when it comes to baking, in my opinion perseverance would always get you somewhere, that and having the right tools all the times makes such a great difference. On my recent trip to Las Vegas, my friend Ryshel and I went to Michael's and we were both surprised with all the new baking supplies that they have, I was told that day we went was the day it all came. So I grabbed the Wilton Fondant and Gum Paste Silicone Mold that has the cherry blossom and the Baroque design. I kept on thinking about the other designs, I was telling myself I would minimize buying baking stuff and concentrate on my crafts instead but I cant resist at all, but when we went back the next day, everything was gone.

Ive used the Ateco Sculpting tool set to press the fondant on the mold and to cut off any excess.

I also got the Wilton Roll and Cut Mat.and I always tried ordering a bigger Wilton rolling pin online but it was always sold out so I also got one since the 9 inch one would be challenging to use.

Although I forgot to hand carry the Wilton  pin guide rings and had it shipped back to Japan instead, good thing we got the Martha Stewart one on base that worked just fine with the size of the rolling pin.

I just used the pre made Wilton Fondant ( i really dont like how it taste, I have yet to try making my own)

Added a few different colors, rolled, unrolled, dusted with confectioners sugar, molded, and voila!

I make it sound so easy but really its not at all, you have to make sure your cake is really smooth so it wont bulge, I forgot to grab one of those things that you use to smooth out the fondant once its on the cake, Im glad it worked just fine.

Jeremy is asking me why is there pink on his cake, told him just because! I knew I really dont have the luxury of making an elaborate one since I just got back from the US and theres so much to be done and so little time. He actually wants me to spend less time with the cake and more time sitting with him on the couch while we were watching  "Just Go With It'.

I was not able to really wait for the filling to really cool off before spreading it.  It still looked so pretty and yummy in the end that I dont want to eat it! My first fondant cake! I think I would still resort back to my plain old chocolate cake no matter how pretty fondant can be!
Here's the one I made last year, couple of hours before midnight, woke him up so he can blow the candles, for two consecutive years he always have duty on his birthday. That's why we were really lucky to be able to spend the whole day last week, even though he didnt tell me he wont be coming to work and I was all freaked out that the alarm was not set! I even left his gift on the table so he would be able to see it when he gets up, turned out I would still be the first one out of bed since I still havent fully adjusted to the time difference!

Have a great weekend everyone!
